An SEO keyword is the word your business will choose to describe your content. It is similar to a main idea or message, but broken down into a single word or short phrase. In another blog of Simply Branded’s, the topic of keywords is broken down and can be found here: SEO tips. There are many things you can do to improve your SEO game, but keywords are probably the most important. If you choose the wrong keyword, it can effect your website’s ability to rank on search engines. Learning how to choose your SEO keywords is not as easy as 1, 2, 3 – but we’ve broken it down for you to better understand.
Some of our other SEO blog cover keyword density, or keyword to text ratio. Using your keyword multiple times throughout your content is a plus. A webpage with good SEO will have their keyword throughout. It will appear in the website’s page title, subheadings, images, meta description, etc. Now that you are getting familiar with SEO, you’ll probably notice a certain word popping up a lot when you’re looking at content. You can see that I used the word “keyword” in all the subheadings. If you use the keyword consistently, this will give you a higher density ratio, which Google uses to determine the value of your content. Don’t get too carried away with this as overusing your keyword, or keyword stuffing, will actually work against you
Before diving into selecting the right keyword, we highly recommend you partner with an SEO expert to go through this process. You can brainstorm and get off to a great start, but without the expertise of analyzing keyword search volume and competition, brainstorming can only get you so far. That being said, when brainstorming your keywords, think of ways that consumers would describe your services. Alternatively, think of questions or phrases your customers are looking up that can lead them to your business. Having a list of desired keywords is a great start to finding the right unique keywords for your website.
Try using variations of a keyword. Everyone has a different perspective and people often searching for things in different ways. Also, geographically, some things are names differently depending on where you are. Some say “soda”, some say “pop”. That example refers to the same product, a carbonated drink. There are some cases where you might want to be careful though. In England, many call fries, “chips”. In the United States, chips are a crunchy snack and not potatoes cut in strips. If you want to take your company and content global, this is something you should think about. Incorporating different search words will broaden your chances of being found by more customers.
When you are selecting a keyword or keyphrase, think of adding a descriptor. A descriptor is an adjective, like “awesome”, “great”, or “best”. When people Google something, they are trying to find the best answers or results. If you have the word “best” in your keyphrase, then it will show up in the results of what is considered “best”. And if you have “best” in your page title, then that must mean you’re the best, right?
The right keyword or keyphrase will help your content rank in search engines. There are many tools that can help you increase your search engine optimization such as WordPress or Google Keyword Tool.
